When you think of Hollywood, you might think of a great plot twist. It’s fun when the adorable character turns out to be the villian. It’s less fun if it’s about your real-life, physical health.
Christina Applegate said on her podcast that she recently discovered she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She was told by doctors for the previous five years that she had it. The news came as shock, especially after being celebrated as a poster child for battling MS with grit.

I’ve personally witnessed a similar, even more serious, story from a family friend. He was misdiagnosed with terminal leukemia! As he spent multiple weeks waiting for ‘redundant’ tests for confirmation, he prepared for his own death. He set up finances and said goodbyes, only to get a call back from the doctor with the news that it was a misdiagnosis.
Understandably, we can become angry at doctors for misdiagnoses. If a high profile person like Applegate has this bad of a medical experience, image your average patient. But I still consider modern medicine a miracle, and am glad that somebody even stands a chance at figuring out how to heal the sick.
For now I’m going to cheer myself up by imagining how this misdiagnosis interaction with the doctor went by quoting one of my favorite Applegate characters, Veronica Corningstone.
Ron Burgandy: It’s science.
Veronica Corningstone: I will have you know that I have more talent and more intelligence in my little finger than you do in your entire body, sir.
